چکیده

Based on an acoustic phonetic analysis, this paper reports a unique vowel inventory in the Tieshikou Hakka. Results show that Tieshikou vowels have four levels of height, and three degrees of backness. This is completely different from Meixian, the wellknown representative dialect of Hakka. And the discrepancy between Tieshikou and Meixian Hakka sheds light on general issues concerning vowel inventory typology.

Gan, Hakka and the Formation of Chinese Dialects

The author argues that Hakka and southern Gan are sister dialects, as they share several innovations not found elsewhere; that they arose out of the Chinese dialect spoken in central Jiangxi in Song times, a stratified dialect which included a non-Chinese substratum, probably Miao-Yao; an archaic layer; and a more recent layer with an important Late Middle Chinese component. It is claimed that ...

On the Structure of /iu/ and /ui/ in Sixian Hakka

Chung (1989:87) claimed that /iu/ and /ui/ are both falling diphthongs in Liudui Hakka, which is similar to Sixian Hakka, the dialect to be discussed here, in most aspects. This paper takes a partially different position that /iu/ is a falling diphthong, while /ui/ is a rising diphthong from the angles of co-occurrence restriction, rhyming and acoustic measurement. Chung (1989:121) argued that ...

Hakka Pitch-contour Parameter Generation Using a Mandarin-trained Pitch-contour Model

In this paper, using an existing pitch-contour model of a Chinese dialect (Mandarin here) to generate pitch-contour parameters for another dialect’s sentences (Hakka here) is studied. This can be generally viewed as a pitch-contour model adaptation problem. We study this problem in hope to save tedious labors and research time needed to build a pitchcontour model for a specific Chinese dialect....

On Cross-Dialect and -Speaker Adaptation of Speaking Rate-Dependent Hierarchical Prosodic Model for a Hakka Text-to-Speech System

This paper presents an effective adaptation of an existing speaking rate-dependent hierarchical prosodic model (SRHPM) for Mandarin to construct the SR-HPM for Hakka, another Chinese dialect. Based on the cross-dialectal linguistic similarities in terms of syntactic and prosodic structures, the adaptation is formulated as a maximum a posteriori estimation (MAP) problem with the existing Mandari...
